Dream emotions

One of my dreams last night evoked a feeling that I have been trying all day to remember, with very little success.

I don't remember the imagery from the dream -- something about coming home after a war, something about the I-character being a prince -- but it's not the imagery I care about. It's the emotion. I can't remember. It was partly like -- oh, I don't know, like a newly crowned (and mostly still school aged) King Peter coming howm to Narnia after his first battle as king; it had elements of Harry returning to Hogwaets after winning some external tournament for Gryffindor (why Gryff in particular and not Hogwarta as a whole I don't know, and the not that sticks out was people back at the castle waiting, like in a Greek myth, to see which color sails adorn the ship, so someone could run back with news of the winner, which makes no sense in a world with magic, but again the visuals don't matter.

And I can't quite remember the emotion.

I think -- in the way you can sometimes remember the shape of a word without remembering the word itself -- it had the shape of a sort of nostalgia, like coming back as an adult to places you frequented as a kid (and things are so much more small and ordinary when you see them with adult eyes). But also a bit of ... deliberate loss? Of having gone to do the thing knowing you'd be changed by it and knowing that you'd never get innocence back, watching kids be kids and being unable to join in because you know too much. And some element of disconnect, like you've been off fighting a battle in Faerie and return triumphant to find that a hundred years have passed overnight and they're really quite happy that you won but you don't know them because they're the great-grandchildren of your baby brother or whatever, and you can't get the missing years back.

Those are the pieces I can remember, but ... echoes, not the source. It's more than that and *I don't remember*. And the more I try, the less I grasp.

This may be one of the greatest episode title puns ever.

I think I cracked up through this entire thing.

Roy Dotrice has passed away at the age of 94. May he rest in peace.

I wasn’t sure who he was at first, since I’m not interested in Game of Thrones. That is, I didn’t realize who he was until I checked IMDB and saw that he had played Roger Wyndam-Pryce in one episode (Lineage) of Angel. Now I remember him. Looking through the rest of his filmography, I have also seen him in Nightmare Classics: Carmilla (1989), Tales From The Crypt (1972), and two episodes of Faerie Tale Theatre. He was also Zeus in three episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

I might need to track down his episode of Tales From The Darkside, wherein he plays "Vampire Count Jeffrey Draco."

This was my weekend (in no particular order):
  1. fed chickens in a hailstorm
  2. discovered my tv has died1
  3. failed to make the necessary decisions to buy a new tv
  4. saw ducklings, kaka, toutouwhai (native robin) and tuatara at the Karori Sanctuary
  5. started listening to the first Rivers of London audiobook
  6. started reading an excellent Les Mis fic
  7. had my first language exchange (in person, for 2hr20)
  8. only watched 1 hour of Kdrama
1 I have sound but no picture; it's only 4 yrs old; I am cranky about the mayfly lifespan of electronic goods these days.

ION, [profile] jamethiel_bane is doing a "post every day" meme, and I thought I'd do my own version, using her prompts, but maybe adapting some to suit me, and probably being far more erratic.

1. What do you prefer to be called by folks reading the entry? Who named you that and why? Where did it come from?

My fandom name is china shop, AKA china AKA Ms Shop. Even offline, in fannish circles I go by china.

It originates from an Ani DiFranco lyric (from the song "You Had Time"), via my pre-fandom blog, which was titled "you are a china shop, I am a bull". In 2007 I wrote on LJ:
Pre-fandom I was a different person online, and while I'm no less me now, well, livejournal is a slightly uncomfortable stage (in the performance sense) for me. The "push" of my entries appearing in your friends' list, as opposed to the "pull" of someone seeking them out. If I'm collected together, I'm more likely to cohere, but in general I suspect I'm a couple of tiles in a mosaic.

I first chose this name as a disclaimer -- you are a china shop, i am a bull -- and then accidentally claimed the fragile part as my identity. Possibly prescient.

The first paragraph of which seems adorably quaint now, in the face of tumblr and reblogging and posts running wild.

Anyway, yes, I am china. I named myself. I like it.

Oh hey that's kind of cool: Mi'kmaq Grand Council flag symbol of change, acceptance for Indigenous Nova Scotians.

And they're adding an acknowledging the land bit in all their publications. Baby steps, but steps all the same. Good for you, Nova Scotia.

FUCK YOU, QUEBEC: Quebec set to pass law banning face coverings for anyone receiving public service — even a bus ride. (Couillard government will hold vote on Bill 62 aimed at establishing 'neutrality of the state.')

No, seriously, what is the matter with Quebec!? (I mean, I know the answer is "racism" but still, wow.)

Not Canadian, but cool: Black Panther trailer.

Conclusion: T'Challa's mom is SMOKING. I'm sorry. I'm shallow. (but she IS.)

Gratitudes

Today's been tough, social-media-wise, so I am closing all of the tabs containing non-dw (realname) social media, and cultivating some gratitudes.

1. Kitten falling asleep on my lap at lunchtime, warm and purring and paws splayed in complete relaxation.

2. Takeout Chinese for lunch with [personal profile] sanj on the spur of the moment. With bonus kitten sitting on the chair at the head of the table, and periodically sticking his head up over the edge of the table to see if we would let him eat our chicken. (Which we wouldn't.)

3. The new mini-season of Voltron went live this past weekend! Kiddo and [personal profile] sanj and I watched half of it last night, and it's delightful.

4. Yesterday I roasted some delicata squash (seasoned with salt and pepper and curry powder) and then roasted the seeds (boiled briefly, then seasoned the same way.) It pleases me to have turned something I would ordinarily have thrown away into tasty snack food.

5. Dinner for tonight is already made, so when I get home from work around 5:30 I can mostly relax. There's work I need to do, but if I don't do it tonight, nothing will catch on fire.

How are y'all holding up? Be gentle with yourselves.

Direct Benefit

Now, I don't know how the people reading this feel about direct cash transfers to those in need, but in the wake of Harvey, Give Directly will be running a small operation in Texas.

Blog Post at Give Directly

I realise that we're more comfortable generally with donating to relief organisations, but, frankly, sometimes it's more direct to hand over the money and let people work out what their priorities are instead of making them jump to the requirements of relief organisations.

(For those of you who object to religious charity - a.k.a. giving that asks for someone to fit religious requirements or to listen to a talk in exchange for food; direct giving also bypasses such hoops.

For those of you who object to 'enabling the poor to by beer and prostitutes', this post is not for you, carry on.)

Is it still a handout? Yes. But it's one that's intended to give people the chance to work out what they need, rather than presuming comfortable, middle-upper class know what they and their families need, or elongating the chain of 'is this something that we think they really need?' Does it rely on good supply chains that then provide the things which people need? Yes. But America has those supply chains and enough people to make it reasonably worthwhile to maintain them.

Could be interesting. Also in the execution of it, how many non-white families get the direct cash transfer as compared to white ones.

Well, that's a bummer,,,

Client I'm working at had a bad financial year - no rain out in the fields, budgets slashed. Come November, there won't be space in the budget at this client for me. Several people are being put on part time, but they're employees of the contracting company so they get priority.

the good, the bad, and the ugly )

In other news, my chooks (Aussie slang for "chickens" for all you sad cases living beyond our borders) are arriving in the next week! (After hearing nothing from the company for far, far too long.) Hopefully just in time to keep the fruit flies down...
